“My favorite commission, without a doubt, is probably the one I completed for Google some years ago,” Rianne enthusiastically shares, her eyes lighting up. “It was an incredibly exciting, yet intensely challenging project that pushed my creative and technical boundaries. These vibrant circles were then integrated into intricately knotted macramé ‘nets.’ The overarching goal was to create unique, semi-private booths that would beautifully and functionally divide an open-plan workspace, offering both effective acoustic dampening and a striking visual appeal that reflected Google’s dynamic brand. I was truly, immensely pleased with the finished result; it felt like a significant artistic and engineering achievement.”

However, the journey to this triumphant outcome was far from smooth, punctuated by a series of artistic and technical hurdles that demanded innovative problem-solving. “It certainly wasn’t plain sailing,” she admits with a reflective nod. “One of the primary and most demanding challenges was achieving absolute precision in matching the exact brand colours of the Google logo. Fibre absorbs dye in unique ways, and ensuring consistent colour saturation and tone across such large pieces required extensive experimentation, meticulous record-keeping, and an incredibly precise eye for detail. Furthermore, the task of cutting the cords with perfect accuracy to achieve those flawlessly smooth, round shapes for the circular elements was an exacting challenge that demanded immense patience and unwavering precision. Any slight deviation would have compromised the overall aesthetic integrity and structural harmony of the piece.”

The innovation and resourcefulness didn’t stop there. “There were also other significant and complex design challenges to overcome,” Rianne continues. “For instance, the top sections of these custom privacy booths needed to be created at a specific, subtle angle. The client desired a dynamic, non-linear aesthetic rather than stark, straight dividers, which introduced complex geometric calculations and intricate knotting adjustments into the creative process. Perhaps the most perplexing challenge, however, was figuring out how to make the central, dyed medallions appear as if they were ‘floating’ effortlessly within the delicate macramé nets. I tried countless different approaches—various knotting techniques, different types of internal supports, experimenting with tension—but nothing quite worked as intended. The medallions either hung crookedly, losing their intended ethereal quality, or, worse, fell off entirely during testing. It was a true and rigorous test of my problem-solving skills and artistic persistence.”

The ultimate solution, as often happens in moments of genuine creative breakthrough, arrived unexpectedly. “I finally discovered the perfect solution while simply strolling through a hardware store one afternoon—which just goes to show that inspiration can genuinely strike anywhere!” she laughs. “I found a combination of drilling precise, discreet holes directly into the hidden support frame behind the medallions and utilizing a clever mix of robust metal wire and minuscule, virtually invisible hooks. This innovative approach allowed me to securely suspend the circles, keeping them perfectly centered and perfectly steady, creating the desired illusion of weightlessness within the macramé structure. This project has undoubtedly been one of my biggest and most complex commissions to date, but precisely because of those formidable challenges and the learning curve involved, it remains one of the ones I’ve enjoyed the most and from which I learned a tremendous amount. It truly pushed my boundaries as a fibre artist and powerfully demonstrated the incredible versatility and potential of textile art in sophisticated modern architectural and interior design contexts.”
