In a world often dominated by muted tones and minimalist trends, one brand dares to declare: ‘Shut up, beige!’ Red Candy, a trailblazing niche homewares retailer, has carved out its distinctive identity by offering a vibrant, modern, and exciting collection of gifts and home accessories. From Michael Jackson tribute tea towels to quirky dinosaur-shaped bottle openers, their online store is a riot of colour and character, promising to inject personality into any living space. We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Andy Menzies, the visionary founder of Red Candy, to explore the origins of this unique brand, his philosophy on product curation, and what makes Red Candy a beloved destination for those seeking truly distinctive decor. Join us as we delve into the colourful world of Red Candy.
The Genesis of Red Candy: Crafting a Niche in Quirky Homewares
Sara Walker: Andy, I’m intimately familiar with Red Candy, and it’s genuinely my first stop when I’m searching for something truly unique, perhaps a skull-shaped decanter for a particular project! Your product range is consistently quirky, often delightfully eccentric, and undeniably vibrant. It truly seems like a dynamic and inspiring environment to be a part of. Could you share the compelling story behind the inception of Red Candy?
Andy Menzies: Thank you, Sara, that’s incredibly kind of you to say! And absolutely, “insane” is certainly preferable to “boring,” especially in the world of home decor, wouldn’t you agree? The initial spark for Red Candy primarily stemmed from a deep-seated entrepreneurial drive—an innate desire to forge my own path, to establish a business from the ground up, and to truly test my capabilities and see what I could achieve. My academic background is in furniture design, which I studied at university. Following my studies, I held various design-focused roles. Over time, I found myself increasingly drawn to more unconventional, ‘out there’ designs – pieces that don’t just blend in but rather compel you to stop, look, and engage. Red Candy was ultimately born at the exciting intersection of these two passions: the drive to create something of my own, and a genuine love for truly distinctive, statement-making design. It was about creating a platform where these two interests could not only coexist but thrive, bringing truly unique home accessories to a market hungry for personality and originality. We set out to challenge the mundane and offer an alternative that celebrates individuality and fun, quickly establishing ourselves as a go-to for those seeking quirky homewares and vibrant home decor.
The Art of Curation: Balancing Personal Taste with Market Appeal for Unique Home Decor
Sara Walker: Red Candy is renowned for its meticulously curated collection of unusual home decor. How do you navigate the complex process of deciding which products make it onto your shelves? What’s your approach to balancing personal aesthetic preferences with crucial commercial considerations? Would you ever stock an item you personally dislike if you believed it would be a strong seller, or conversely, would you prioritize a product you adore even if its market potential was uncertain? Furthermore, where do you unearth these incredible finds, and do you offer any items that are truly exclusive to Red Candy?
Andy Menzies: Initially, when Red Candy was just starting, product sourcing felt refreshingly straightforward. My primary criterion was simple: if I looked at an item and thought, ‘I wish I had designed that!’ then it was in. This personal, almost instinctive approach meant our product selection grew organically, very much as an extension of my own personality and taste for distinctive design. However, as Red Candy has matured and our team has expanded, the process has naturally evolved. Now, with more talented individuals involved in the curation, I believe our collection genuinely represents a harmonious blend of all our collective tastes and perspectives. Generally speaking, if a product embodies fun, is strikingly colourful, possesses a delightful touch of oddity, and overflows with character, you can bet we’re going to get our hands on it. Our goal is always to offer unique home decor that truly stands out.
While there might have been moments in the past where we stocked items we weren’t personally enamoured with, or overlooked pieces we loved due to perceived commercial limitations, we actively try to avoid that approach now. The philosophy is quite simple: if we, as a team, aren’t genuinely excited and passionate about our latest discoveries, how can we realistically expect our customers to be? If a potential new product is met with blank stares or a lack of enthusiasm from my team, it’s a clear sign that it doesn’t align with our brand’s spirit, and we usually decide to pass on it. The right product, the one that truly embodies the Red Candy ethos, typically elicits a resounding ‘YES!’ from all of us simultaneously. That collective excitement is our ultimate litmus test for new additions to our collection of vibrant home accessories.
Regarding exclusivity, it’s an area we’re immensely focused on. Historically, we’ve had a modest sprinkling of exclusive items, but I can confidently say that this is a significant growth area for us in the coming year and beyond. We’re actively forging partnerships and commissioning unique pieces that will only be available through Red Candy. We already have several fantastic, exclusive crackers in the pipeline, ready to launch, so I’d strongly advise keeping a very close eye on our channels for these exciting new arrivals. These exclusives will further cement our position as a premier destination for those seeking genuinely unique and design-led gifts and quirky homewares, reinforcing our commitment to offering something truly special and unavailable anywhere else.
Unveiling the Bestseller: The Surprising Star of Red Candy’s Collection
Sara Walker: With such an extraordinary and diverse range of quirky homewares, I’m incredibly curious to know: what is currently your absolute best-selling product? Is it one of the wonderfully outlandish pieces that Red Candy is so famous for, or perhaps something more unexpectedly popular?
Andy Menzies: You know what, Sara, I would absolutely love to tell you that our top seller is something fantastically mad, like an extravagant dinosaur lamp, a playful hippo-shaped bottle opener, or a set of whimsical cactus-shaped glasses. Those are the kinds of unique home decor items that truly embody the spirit of Red Candy. But, if I’m being completely honest, the truth is far less dramatic and a touch more humble: our current bestseller is nothing more exciting than a simple coat hook! It’s an impeccably designed coat hook, certainly – crafted from solid wood with a pleasingly curved, minimalist body that offers both functionality and a subtle aesthetic appeal. However, when you compare it to the audacious personality of the rest of our range, it undeniably stands out as one of the more shy and retiring types in our collection of vibrant home accessories.
Fortunately, the rest of our top ten bestsellers paint a much more vivid and characteristic picture of what Red Candy represents. This esteemed list includes many of those beloved dino lamps, several absolutely fabulous statement clocks that truly elevate any room, and a dynamic assortment of 3D wall décor that adds depth and personality to interiors. So, on balance, while the coat hook holds the crown for now, we certainly can’t be too disheartened. Our customers clearly appreciate both the subtle sophistication of a well-designed essential and the bold, joyful expression offered by our more celebrated quirky homewares. It’s a fascinating insight into the diverse tastes of our audience, who appreciate both understated quality and flamboyant design-led gifts.
From Scarlet to Spectrum: The Evolution of Red Candy’s Colourful Identity
Sara Walker: Your brand name, “Red Candy,” suggests a very specific palette. Could you elaborate on the significant decision to transition from a brand focused solely on red items to what you affectionately call “Multicoloured Candy”? What prompted this bold shift, and how has it impacted the brand’s identity and offerings?
Andy Menzies: You’ve hit on a crucial part of our history, Sara! As you rightly alluded to, the original, foundational concept for Red Candy was incredibly focused: we were committed to selling ONLY red items. Yes, you heard that right. Intense, isn’t it? If you were on the hunt for a striking red clock, an elegant red vase, or a vibrant red kitchen accessory, we were your exclusive destination. This very specific niche was surprisingly well-received, and the brand experienced incredibly rapid growth in its early years. Our loyal customers loved the singular focus and the sheer intensity of our red collection.
However, throughout this period of growth, a consistent theme began to emerge in our customer interactions. We would constantly receive inquiries along the lines of, ‘Hey, do you offer this particular item in other colours?’ For a couple of years, we politely, but firmly, explained that our brand was dedicated solely to red. Yet, the demand became increasingly undeniable. We reached a pivotal point where we truly began to listen to what our customers were telling us. There was such a growing and undeniable appetite for the distinct style and unique design of our items, but with the desire for a broader colour palette, that we decided it was time to embrace this feedback wholeheartedly. We chose to go with the flow, shedding our monochromatic skin and embracing all the glorious colours of the rainbow!
Looking back, I can unequivocally say it was the absolute best decision we’ve ever made for the brand. This transformation allowed us to expand our offering exponentially, bringing our signature quirky homewares and unique home decor to an even wider audience. Despite looking at these colourful items all day, every day, I still find browsing the Red Candy website a total joy. The vibrancy and diversity now truly reflect the playful and expressive spirit we always aimed for. It has allowed us to become a true haven for vibrant home accessories and design-led gifts in every shade imaginable, cementing our reputation as a destination for eclectic interior design enthusiasts.

Andy Menzies’ Personal Style: A Tale of Contrast and Creative Expression
Sara Walker: Given Red Candy’s vibrant and eclectic aesthetic, I’m curious about your own personal style, Andy. How would you describe your individual approach to fashion and, perhaps more tellingly, to your own home interiors? Does your personal space echo the bold, colourful ethos of Red Candy, or do you gravitate towards something entirely different?
Andy Menzies: That’s a great question, Sara! When it comes to my personal style, there’s a rather interesting dichotomy at play. I prefer my clothes to be wonderfully simple and understated, while my interiors are quite the opposite – a true celebration of the eclectic! During my most recent wardrobe audit, I made a rather startling discovery: an overwhelming 97.5% of my outfits consisted of either grey or black items. So, in a recent, daring move, I’ve pushed the boat out a little and invested in some rather sophisticated dark blue numbers. Generally, you’ll rarely spot me without a pair of my much-loved, albeit rather dilapidated, once-white Converse sneakers, a trusty pair of Levis, and one of my many variations of a grey pullover. Perhaps I really do need to consider investing in a pair of vibrant red socks to add a splash of colour, even if only subtly!
My home, however, tells an entirely different story. It’s a delightful mishmash, a truly authentic collection of things I love, creating what I’d describe as an eclectic interior design scheme. I have vintage ski posters proudly displayed alongside a beautiful Bowie watercolour, next to a huge, silver-framed mirror, which in turn sits beside some of my own personal photography. It’s a space where nothing is overtly matched or coordinated in the traditional sense. Yet, despite the apparent disarray, it all somehow cobbles together harmoniously to form an interior that is genuinely smile-inducing, wonderfully warm, and incredibly homely. It’s a reflection of personal history and passions, creating a comfortable and inspiring sanctuary.
People often ask me if my home is absolutely stuffed full of Red Candy bits and bobs, and surprisingly, the answer is no, it isn’t! While I adore our products, I’ve always believed that a home should reflect the individual, not just a brand. However, I must confess, some of the stunning new Seletti range we’ve just launched has definitely made its way onto my Christmas list this year. Those pieces are just too good to resist, and they’d fit perfectly into my personal brand of quirky home decor. It’s about finding those unique statement pieces that truly speak to you, regardless of whether they’re from your own store or elsewhere.
Defining the Red Candy Customer: A Profile of Creativity and Bold Interiors
Sara Walker: With such a distinct brand identity and product range, I imagine you have a very clear idea of who your ideal customer is. Do you indeed have such a thing as a ‘typical customer’ for Red Candy, and if so, could you paint a picture of who they are and what they’re looking for?
Andy Menzies: Oh, absolutely, Sara! We’ve definitely amassed quite an eccentric and wonderfully engaged following over the years, and a clear profile of our typical customer has certainly emerged. In fact, many of them are so passionate about their homes and our products that they frequently call us just for a friendly chat, eager to share their latest weird and wonderful interior ideas and seek inspiration! Our typical customer is often female, usually in her mid-30s, likely has a young family, and is TOTALLY design-inspired. At heart, she’s a bit of a creative soul, someone who truly appreciates and seeks out characterful and colourful pieces to adorn her home. She isn’t afraid to make a strong, personal statement with her interior design, viewing her living space as an extension of her own unique personality and style. She’s not just buying a product; she’s investing in a piece of art or a conversation starter that brings joy and reflects her individuality.
We’ve observed a fascinating trend among our customer base: we see a lot of the same names consistently returning to shop with us each time we launch new products or introduce fresh collections. This loyalty is incredibly rewarding and speaks volumes about the connection they feel with the Red Candy brand and our unique home decor. This frequent return suggests one of two things: either they’re regularly refreshing and replacing items to keep their homes feeling vibrant and contemporary, or, as we optimistically hope, they are joyfully stuffing their homes full of our fun, quirky decor and vibrant home accessories! We genuinely hope it’s the latter – there’s nothing more satisfying than knowing our products are bringing so much personality and fun into people’s lives, encouraging a world where every home is a bold, colourful expression of its inhabitants. They are the heart of our brand, always seeking those distinctive touches that transform a house into a truly inspiring and personal sanctuary.
A Glimpse Inside: A Day in the Life at Red Candy HQ
Sara Walker: Red Candy truly radiates a sense of creativity and fun. Could you give us a peek behind the scenes and describe a typical day at Red Candy HQ? What’s the atmosphere like, and what activities fill the hours for you and your team?
Andy Menzies: Well, every truly good day at Red Candy HQ absolutely begins with a robust cup of Earl Grey tea for me! While the rest of the team are typically fuelling up with coffee, my 8 AM ritual involves that comforting brew alongside a bowl of porridge, all while I’m catching up on the morning’s essential emails and preparing for the day ahead. Once the initial administrative tasks are handled, we usually gather for a quick catch-up, outlining our individual and collective goals for the day and discussing any pressing priorities. This is then invariably followed by at least ten minutes, often more, dedicated to petting and playing with one of the many delightful office dogs that happily stroll around our building. I’d confidently say this is probably the most important and morale-boosting part of the day for everyone! Their cheerful presence truly adds to the vibrant atmosphere and embodies the playful spirit of Red Candy.
We pride ourselves on handling most of the ‘fun stuff’ right here in-house. This includes everything from our public relations efforts and the exciting process of product sourcing and curation, to all aspects of graphic design, compelling copywriting, and managing our vibrant social media presence. We genuinely thrive on collaboration and tend to work very closely as a team when it comes to brainstorming and developing new ideas, new product lines, or marketing strategies. This collaborative spirit means that most days frequently spiral into lively and engaging discussions about each other’s work, offering feedback, bouncing ideas around, and collectively pushing our creative boundaries. There’s rarely a dull moment here at Red Candy HQ, filled with laughter, innovation, and shared passion for quirky homewares – well, that is, apart from the dreaded accounts on a Friday afternoon, which even our office dogs can’t make fun! The dynamic environment ensures we’re always pushing the boundaries of unique home decor and design-led gifts.
The Horizon for Red Candy: Exciting Prospects and a Colourful Future
Sara Walker: Looking ahead, what’s next on the horizon for Red Candy? What exciting developments, new directions, or initiatives can your loyal customers and future enthusiasts expect from the brand in the coming year and beyond?
Andy Menzies: We are SO incredibly excited for the coming year, particularly as we move beyond 2019! We’ve got some absolutely awesome new pieces currently winging their way to us as we speak, meticulously planned and set for a spectacular launch in early January. While I don’t want to reveal too many details just yet – I apologise if that makes me a bit of a party pooper – I can certainly hint at the thrilling direction we’re heading in. These magical new additions are bravely poised to lead Red Candy in an even more fun, characterful, and undeniably captivating direction than ever before. We’re constantly innovating and seeking out products that truly resonate with our motto, pushing the boundaries of what constitutes quirky homewares and unique home decor. We’re exploring new collaborations, expanding into exciting new categories, and generally aiming to elevate the Red Candy experience for everyone.
That’s all the tantalising information you’re getting from me for the meantime, but rest assured, our dedicated customers will be amongst the very first we contact and notify the moment these incredible new stocks hit our shelves and become available online. Keep a very close eye on our website and social media channels, as we promise to deliver even more vibrant home accessories and design-led gifts that will bring joy and individuality to every corner of your home. The future of Red Candy is bright, bold, and full of character!
