Crafting a Unique Aesthetic: The ‘Scrapbook’ Style and Brand Identity

Sara Walker: I’m captivated by the distinct look and feel of your blog – it exudes the charm of a beautifully curated scrapbook or a dynamic mood board, rather than a conventional website. Was this the aesthetic you envisioned from the outset, or did it evolve over time? And could you shed light on how you conceived the memorable name, ‘Dear Designer’?

Carole King: I’m delighted that you perceive it that way; it truly has always resonated with the idea of a personal scrapbook for me. In its nascent stages, the blog was precisely that: a digital space where I could freely gather and share anything that particularly caught my eye or ignited my imagination. Over the years, however, it has undergone a natural and purposeful evolution. While it remains a source of interior inspiration, the content has become much more refined and curated, reflecting my specific aesthetic and discerning taste. I now encounter countless design elements that I find appealing, but I’ve developed a selective process: if something doesn’t authentically align with the recognizable and cohesive ‘brand’ of Dear Designer, it typically won’t feature on the blog. This consistent brand identity is crucial, much like how successful Instagrammers meticulously maintain a coherent visual feed to keep their audience engaged and their brand instantly recognizable.

The story behind the name ‘Dear Designer’ is actually quite amusing, if a little embarrassing for me to recount! One bustling morning on the London Underground, I found myself inadvertently glancing over someone’s shoulder as they read The Sun newspaper. Their attention was fixed on the agony aunt page, famously titled ‘Dear Deirdre.’ A sudden spark of inspiration struck me: I envisioned my blog as a platform not only for inspiration but also for offering valuable advice to my readers, much like an agony aunt guides her audience. It dawned on me that I could be an ‘interiors agony aunt.’ And just like that, the name ‘Dear Designer’ was born – a spontaneous, yet perfectly fitting, moniker that encapsulates the blog’s dual mission of inspiring and advising its community.

Carole King’s Journey: A Path from Advertising to Interior Design Mastery

Sara Walker: Could you tell me a little about your professional background and describe the pivotal moments that led you to your current influential position in the interior design landscape?

Carole King: My formal entry into the world of interior design commenced fourteen years ago when I undertook studies at the esteemed KLC School of Design. This marked a significant career pivot for me, as my earlier professional life had been dedicated to the fast-paced advertising industry. Despite my years in advertising, an innate and enduring interest in interiors had always captivated me. The true catalyst for this career change arrived when a designer I greatly admired and collaborated with was featured on the popular blog ‘Desire to Inspire.’ That particular experience opened my eyes to the incredible potential of online platforms for sharing design passion, prompting me to delve deep into the burgeoning world of interior design blogs, absorbing as much knowledge and inspiration as I could.

Empowered by this newfound direction, I launched my own blog, Dear Designer, in 2009. Initially, it was a purely personal venture, born out of a desire to share my evolving tastes and findings. The blog quickly gained momentum, and a mere two years later, in 2011, I embarked on another exciting project: co-founding Heart Home magazine alongside Arianna (of Arianna’s Daily) and Daniel (of Atelier Tally). Both Dear Designer and Heart Home experienced substantial growth, garnering dedicated followings and significant industry recognition. The success and demands of these platforms eventually enabled me to transition away from working for other entities, allowing me to fully concentrate on freelance interior design work and the continuous development of my blogs. It’s truly remarkable, as I certainly did not envision Dear Designer, when it began as a simple hobby, evolving into such a robust and rewarding business opportunity. It’s a testament to the power of passion and perseverance.

Personal Style Unveiled: Adapting Trends and Embracing Contrast

Sara Walker: How would you articulate your personal design style? Do you lean towards traditional, modern, edgy, or a unique blend of various influences?

Carole King: As an interior designer, I possess an inherent curiosity and appreciation for the full spectrum of design styles. My professional perspective allows me to engage with and understand diverse aesthetics. When it comes to my own personal style, I would characterize it as quite fluid and responsive, often shifting in alignment with current trends. It’s genuinely challenging not to be influenced when you are constantly immersed in a world brimming with new ideas, innovative products, and evolving design philosophies. The context of a space also plays a significant role in shaping my approach. For instance, my current residence is a new-build property, which presented a pristine, neutral canvas. To infuse it with character and depth, I’ve strategically introduced dramatic elements, utilizing bold wallpapers and strong, impactful colours to create a distinct personality. I particularly love the interplay of contrast in design; it adds so much visual interest and dynamism. This inclination towards dramatic contrasts is so pronounced that my boyfriend humorously refers to my current phase as my ‘black period’!

In stark contrast, I also have a charming holiday home nestled in Norfolk, and its design ethos is entirely different. There, the aesthetic is intentionally light, bright, and airy, achieved through a palette of soft neutrals and a much more traditional, understated look. This dichotomy perfectly illustrates how my design approach adapts to the unique characteristics and desired ambiance of each property. Despite these stylistic differences, a consistent principle underpins both homes: a strong commitment to sustainability. I have consciously adopted a ‘re-cycle and re-use’ approach wherever feasible, integrating existing pieces and vintage finds. This not only imbues the spaces with unique charm and a sense of history but also reflects a mindful, environmentally conscious design philosophy that proves beautiful interiors can also be sustainable.

Balancing Idealism with Attainability: The Secret to Engaging Readers

Sara Walker: Your website enjoys tremendous success, a clear indicator that you are deeply connecting with your readership. What, in your estimation, is the primary appeal of Dear Designer’s Blog? Is it the presentation of an idealized design vision, or perhaps the emphasis on attainability?

Carole King: I make a very conscious effort to ground my content in realism and ensure that the designs I feature are genuinely attainable for my audience. While I wholeheartedly feature and celebrate beautiful, inspiring interiors, a fundamental aspect of my mission is to illustrate that a stylish and aesthetically pleasing home is entirely within reach, even if one doesn’t possess an extensive budget. A significant proportion of the products and design solutions I highlight on the blog are thoughtfully sourced from readily accessible high street retailers, strategically mixed with the occasional, more aspirational high-end item. This thoughtful blend empowers readers to discover inspiration and practical ideas that align with their financial parameters, demonstrating how to achieve a sophisticated look without necessarily incurring extravagant costs.

Beyond the practical advice, the visual quality of the blog is absolutely paramount. I am committed to using only magazine-quality images, understanding that compelling visuals are indispensable for conveying design inspiration effectively. Over the years, I have dedicated considerable time and effort to teaching myself and refining my photography skills. My invaluable experience working closely with professional photographers during my tenure with Heart Home magazine provided me with hands-on knowledge, which I have meticulously applied to Dear Designer. Consequently, when I choose to feature images of my own home, they are captured and presented with the same meticulous care and polished aesthetic as the professional press images I license. Therefore, to directly answer your question, I believe the enduring appeal of Dear Designer’s Blog lies in its sophisticated fusion of idealism – showcasing the aspirational possibilities of design – seamlessly integrated with a strong emphasis on attainability, making those design dreams feel tangible and within reach for every dedicated reader.

Global Inspiration: How Travel Shapes Design Vision

Sara Walker: Your passion for travel is evident across your platforms. To what extent do you believe your travels have influenced and shaped your unique sense of style and overall design perspective?

Carole King: Travel, for me, is an absolutely indispensable wellspring of inspiration, a truly unparalleled catalyst for creativity. Any activity that allows one to temporarily detach from the daily grind is beneficial for fostering creative thought, but travel, in particular, possesses a profound ability to broaden the mind in ways that few other experiences can. It exposes you to an astonishing tapestry of diverse cultures, breathtaking natural landscapes, fresh and unexpected colour palettes, distinct culinary traditions, intricate architectural marvels, and a myriad of traditional crafts from every corner of the globe. The sheer breadth of influence is almost limitless; it’s genuinely impossible not to be deeply affected and inspired by these rich encounters.

While we are incredibly fortunate in this modern age to have the convenience of purchasing almost anything with a few clicks from the comfort of an armchair, I firmly believe that this digital shopping experience can never truly replicate the tactile, sensory, and often exhilarating experience of haggling for a unique treasure in a bustling foreign market. There’s an undeniable narrative, a personal memory, and a deeper connection embedded within objects acquired through such adventures. Consequently, I always make a point of bringing something tangible back from my travels – whether it’s a piece of local artistry, a distinctive textile, or a small decorative object – something that encapsulates the spirit of the place. And, of course, I return with countless photographs, which serve as an invaluable visual diary and a continuous fount of inspiration for both my blog content and my ongoing design projects.

The Rewards of Blogging: Entrepreneurship and Creative Freedom

Sara Walker: Running such an incredibly successful blog must have undoubtedly opened numerous doors for you. What are some of the most significant opportunities and benefits that Dear Designer has afforded you?

Carole King: The most profound reward stemming from the cultivation of Dear Designer into the flourishing platform it is today has been the extraordinary opportunity to establish and independently run my own business. This invaluable autonomy grants me the freedom to meticulously select and pursue only those projects that genuinely ignite my interest and align perfectly with my creative vision. It is incredibly fulfilling to possess such a high degree of control and direction over my professional endeavors. Beyond the immense satisfaction of entrepreneurship, the success of the blog has also serendipitously paved the way for numerous exciting travel opportunities, often linked to international design events, press trips, or sourcing unique content from various destinations. It truly represents a win-win scenario, seamlessly weaving together my deeply held passion for design, my love for writing, and my innate desire for exploration into a cohesive, rewarding, and deeply fulfilling career path.

Expert Tips for Revitalizing Your Home: Carole King’s Go-To Design Solutions

Sara Walker: What are your absolute favorite, go-to design tips for instantly brightening and breathing new life into a tired or outdated interior? For instance, some people swear by the strategic use of clever lighting, whereas I personally gravitate towards transforming a space starting with texture and colour.

Carole King: When it comes to dramatically invigorating a tired interior, nothing, in my considered opinion, quite rivals the transformative power of simply changing the colour of the walls. It’s a remarkably cost-effective solution, making it highly accessible for almost any budget. The immense beauty of this approach lies in its practicality: the vast majority of us possess the basic skills to competently wield a paint roller and brush, and crucially, if an initial colour choice proves to be a regrettable misstep, it can be easily corrected with another coat! A fresh coat of paint can either make an incredibly dramatic statement, infusing vibrant energy and boldness into a space, or, conversely, it can be utilized to achieve the exact opposite effect, calming and soothing a room that feels overly chaotic or visually overwhelming. The impact is both immediate and profoundly effective in redefining the ambiance of a space.

Following a transformative wall colour update, my next key focus would invariably shift to refreshing the artwork and soft furnishings. These elements are inherently versatile and offer immense potential for injecting new personality, introducing current trends, and elevating the overall style of a room without necessitating major structural alterations. In fact, this precise process is what I am actively planning and undertaking for my own living room right now. The existing white walls, which have served their purpose admirably, will soon receive a warming coat of carefully selected pink paint, designed to infuse the space with a more inviting, cozy, and contemporary ambiance. Concurrently, I am diligently on the lookout for captivating new pieces of art and a curated selection of fresh cushions to perfectly complement the updated colour scheme and complete the aesthetic refresh. These smaller, yet cumulatively impactful, changes collectively contribute to a dramatically revitalized and deeply personalized interior that feels entirely new and invigorated.
