Furthermore, finding artisans today who are genuinely willing and able to craft true “one-off” pieces tailored to specific customer needs is becoming increasingly challenging. We’ve sent our distinctive wall panelling as far as South America, our elegant Mora Clocks have found homes in New Zealand, our handcrafted chairs grace spaces in Tokyo, and our lamp bases illuminate homes in Australia – these are just a few examples of our international reach. Our current best-seller, which continues to surprise and delight us, is our range of radiator tables. SW: I understand that you now outsource a lot of the manufacture to India. How did you go about establishing those relationships, and finding the people who could make your products to your standards? Do you make any trips out there at all?

JM: Our manufacturing partnership in Jodhpur, India, is a cornerstone of our operation and a relationship we deeply value. We’ve been collaborating with the same incredible team there for nearly twenty years, and over this time, they have truly become an extension of the Scumble Goosie family. Building such a long-standing and trust-filled relationship has been instrumental in our success. We do make trips out to Jodhpur, though perhaps not as frequently as we’d like, simply due to the demanding schedule of running the business. Thankfully, modern technology like FaceTime and email makes seamless communication and collaboration possible across continents.

The initial connection was quite serendipitous. We were approached by a very enterprising individual who admired our work and confidently suggested that his team could produce our designs using solid hardwood, rather than the MDF (medium-density fibreboard) we were using at the time. We decided to take a chance, and it’s a decision we’ve never regretted. The shift to solid hardwood was transformative; wood is an infinitely more appealing material to work with, offering superior durability, a more luxurious feel, and aesthetic depth. Crucially, solid wood also boasts a huge advantage over MDF in that it doesn’t necessarily require painting, perfectly complementing our offering of unpainted, customizable furniture. This partnership has allowed us to elevate the quality of our products significantly while maintaining a sustainable and ethical supply chain.

SW: Can you tell me a little about one of the main woods you use, mango – why is it so suitable for what you do?

JM: Mango wood is one of our primary timbers, and it’s exceptionally well-suited to our philosophy and product range for several compelling reasons. Firstly, it is immensely strong and incredibly durable, ensuring that the furniture we produce is robust and built to withstand the test of time. Beyond its structural integrity, mango wood possesses a naturally attractive grain and a warm, inviting hue, which appeals to many of our customers. This inherent beauty means that while it takes all types of paint extremely well for those opting for a finished look, many prefer to leave it raw, allowing its natural character to shine through.

JM: Participating in trade and retail shows is absolutely vital for Scumble Goosie, for a multitude of reasons. While we are currently in the process of developing a new website with enhanced imagery to better showcase our products online, there’s simply no substitute for experiencing our furniture in person. Digital images, no matter how high-quality, can never fully convey the true texture, scale, and craftsmanship of a solid wooden piece.

Customers at shows frequently comment on how incredibly tactile our furniture is and how much “nicer in real life” it is than they had anticipated from seeing only photographs. This direct, sensory experience allows them to truly appreciate the quality of the timber, the smooth finishes, and the robust construction in a way that’s impossible online. Beyond sales, these events are incredibly valuable opportunities to meet people directly and engage in conversations about their specific needs and challenges in finding suitable furniture.
