It was such a pleasant and affirming feeling, and it was likely the precise moment I realized I had a natural aptitude for art. That memory must have been profoundly special, as it has stayed with me so clearly for all these years.”

Throughout her formative school years, drawing, painting, and crafting became more than just hobbies; they were her true calling. Olga would often lose herself in creating intricate illustrations for books she had read, meticulously constructing miniature cardboard dolls’ houses, or sculpting delicate figures from clay. Her father, an ice hockey coach, was her most enthusiastic supporter, but it was from her mother that Olga inherited her exceptional artistic talent. Her mother was a skilled artist in her own right, a gift she, in turn, received from her own father. Artistic flair clearly flowed through the family veins, yet it was an interesting paradox that none of her relatives had ever pursued art as a professional career. This familial legacy was precisely why her mother sagely suggested Olga enroll in art school at the tender age of 11, envisioning a future where her daughter could transform her innate skills into a fulfilling and successful profession.

The Rigors and Rewards of Russian Art Schools

“In Russia, art schools serve as an invaluable optional extension to comprehensive education, specifically designed for children who aspire to significantly develop and refine their artistic capabilities,” Olga explains. “It’s an intensive and comprehensive program, typically running four days a week and spanning a full four years. During this immersive period, young students delve into a diverse spectrum of art subjects. They receive rigorous training in drawing and painting, experimenting with an extensive array of media and techniques. Crucially, they are introduced to the rich traditions of Russian folk art, undergo formal studies in art history, and engage in the tactile creation of clay sculptures. I absolutely cherished my time there; those years were transformative, and upon my graduation, my desire to continue studying these captivating subjects at University was stronger than ever.” This foundational artistic education profoundly shaped Olga’s perception of art and instilled in her a deep respect for traditional techniques, setting the stage for her future endeavors with Olenka Design.

The Soul of Russia: Inspiration from Folk Art

“Something that has had an immense and enduring influence on my entire body of work is the vast and intricate world of Russian folk art,” Olga elaborates. “This umbrella term encompasses dozens of distinct art and craft styles, each with unique characteristics, that originated in various regions across Russia, often several hundred years ago. These artistic expressions were born from a deeply ingrained cultural desire among the people to beautify their everyday surroundings and personal possessions – from the humble walls of their homes to the tableware that graced their tables, the kitchen utensils they used daily, children’s toys, traditional clothing, and practical storage items. Drawing profound inspiration from ancient Russian fairytales, the splendor of nature, and the narratives of daily life, these captivating paintings frequently showcased charming genre scenes, highly stylized botanical motifs, graceful birds, and a variety of beloved animals.”

The names of most of these distinctive painting styles are intrinsically linked to their places of origin – the specific region or town where they first blossomed. Among these, we find the exquisitely delicate blue and white patterns of Gzhel ceramics, the wonderfully whimsical Dymkovo toys known for their bright colors and cheerful spirit, the beautifully painted Zhostovo trays adorned with vibrant floral designs, and the brightly colored painting style known as Gorodets, often used to decorate practical kitchen utensils with scenes of village life. “One truly fascinating aspect these diverse Russian folk art traditions share is their profound and deliberate use of color, although each specific style adheres to its own unique and characteristic palette,” Olga highlights. “For instance, in Khokhloma art, the primary and most recognizable colors are a striking trio of black, rich gold, and vibrant red, creating a luxurious and bold effect. Gzhel ceramics, in stark contrast, are instantly identifiable by their elegant combination of pristine white and deep blue, evoking a sense of calm and classic beauty. “My contemporary work is particularly and profoundly inspired by Khokhloma art, a style steeped in a rich and captivating history,” Olga explains with visible passion. “It first emerged in the 17th century within the Nizhnij Novgorod, Volga region of Russia, and was aptly named after a significant trade settlement located in the very same area. The ingenious Russian craftsmen of that era developed an astonishing technique that allowed them to achieve a breathtaking gold-like effect without actually using any real gold paint. This innovative method involved applying a silver-tin powder and then lacquering and firing the wooden items, resulting in a shimmering, golden finish. This unique effect made the wooden pieces appear much heavier and metallic, imbuing them with an expensive and luxurious aesthetic that belied their humble wooden origins. The Khokhloma style is renowned for its vivid and dynamic patterns, which typically feature intricate arrangements of stylized flowers, luscious berries, and delicate leaves. Often, the mythical and majestic Firebird, a symbol of beauty and magic in Russian folklore, was also a central and captivating element within these elaborate paintings. This blend of nature-inspired motifs and fantastical creatures, rendered in a distinctive color palette, provides an inexhaustible source of creativity for Olenka Design’s modern interpretations of classic Russian art.”

“After several fulfilling years dedicated to working as a pattern designer for a prominent flooring company, I instinctively knew that the opportune moment had arrived for me to embark on the exciting journey of establishing my very own business,” Olga recounts. “This period was particularly thrilling because significant advancements in digital printing technology within both the wallpaper and textile industries had dramatically lowered the barriers to entry, enabling independent designers like myself to confidently enter the market and share our unique visions. When it came to naming my new venture, I chose ‘Olenka,’ which is a charming and affectionate diminutive of my own name, Olga. My intention was to select a name that was not only memorable and easy to pronounce but also distinctly Russian, serving as an authentic reflection of my deep-seated roots and the inherent style embedded in my designs. Olenka Design thus became a direct extension of my identity and my artistic philosophy.”

With Olenka Design, Olga embarked on a mission: “Using traditional Russian folk patterns as my fundamental base, my ambition was to infuse them with a fresh dimension and to forge a brand that not only embraces and celebrates the timeless beauty of traditional Russian art but also presents it with a contemporary twist, primarily through the thoughtful application of innovative and modern color schemes. While my creative impulse is largely driven by this desire for modernity, I must admit I couldn’t entirely resist paying homage to tradition by incorporating a classic, time-honored color scheme in my beloved ‘Milana Gold’ design. It’s a delicate balance between honoring the past and envisioning the future, a creative tension that truly defines the Olenka Design aesthetic, offering unique wallpaper patterns inspired by history but designed for today’s interiors.”

The Intricate Process: From Idea to Exquisite Wallpaper

“When I embark on the creation of a brand new pattern for Olenka Design, my very first step is to clearly define its fundamental visual theme,” Olga explains, detailing her meticulous process. “I decide whether the design will primarily feature captivating florals, a graceful combination of florals and birds, or perhaps the charming appeal of berries. This initial conceptualization sets the entire direction for the pattern. Following this, I delve into crucial considerations such as the scale of the motifs, the overall composition, and the precise nature of the repeat pattern. Essentially, I always begin with a distinct idea or a strong visual concept.”

“The next phase involves bringing this idea to life through traditional drawing. I meticulously sketch the pattern using pencil and then refine it with ink. Quite often, I will create a few different versions of the same concept, allowing me to carefully compare and then select the absolute best rendition. Once the hand-drawn artwork is perfected, the digital transformation begins. I scan the drawing onto the computer and then utilize specialized software, primarily Adobe Illustrator, to precisely create the pattern repeat and introduce the chosen color palettes. This digital stage allows for immense flexibility and experimentation.”

“I make a concerted effort to develop as many distinct colorways as possible for each design, pushing the boundaries of the pattern’s versatility. These varied color combinations are then printed on paper, giving me a tangible representation of their potential. From this broad selection, I carefully shortlist the most promising options, ultimately ordering them as physical samples from my trusted manufacturer. The arrival of these samples is a pivotal moment; it’s when I can truly see and evaluate how the colors interact with the actual substrate of the wallpaper. This final, tactile assessment is critical in making the definitive choice for the collection, ensuring every Olenka Design wallpaper meets my exacting standards for quality and aesthetic appeal, bridging the gap between digital design and a luxurious finished product.”

Signature Designs and Future Horizons

“My very first design, Milana, holds a special place in my heart,” Olga shares. “Even after several years since its inception, I remain incredibly pleased with the exceptional quality and intricate detail embedded within it. However, I do believe it’s probably about time to infuse it with some exciting new colorways! I envision a beautiful shade of green, for instance, making a truly lovely and refreshing new addition to the Milana collection. It’s never an easy task to pick a personal favorite when each design is so deeply personal, but if I absolutely had to choose, I would narrow it down to two: Milana Hot Pink/Grey and Neva Blue. While Milana, particularly in its hot pink and grey iteration, undeniably makes a striking and bold statement, Neva Blue, in contrast, masterfully creates a wonderfully serene and calming atmosphere. Both perfectly exemplify the versatility and emotional range of Olenka Design’s offerings.”

Looking ahead, Olga has exciting plans for the expansion of Olenka Design. “Next, I’m incredibly eager to add a complementary range of matching textiles and plush cushions to our existing collection of exquisite wallpapers. This will be a truly thrilling endeavor, allowing our customers to create fully cohesive and beautifully coordinated interior spaces. Furthermore, I am keen to introduce several new and innovative colorways across all my existing wallpaper designs, constantly refreshing and broadening our aesthetic appeal. It would also be absolutely amazing to undertake some bespoke commission work in the new year, offering personalized artistic creations tailored to individual clients. So, the overarching plan is clear: to continue to organically grow the business, explore new creative avenues, and, most importantly, keep doing what I absolutely love – bringing unique Russian-inspired patterns to homes around the world through Olenka Design.”
