Creating the perfect living space can often feel like an insurmountable challenge, especially for families navigating the vibrant, sometimes chaotic, world with young children. Before little ones graced your home, your living room might have been a sanctuary of sophisticated taste – perhaps featuring pristine cream carpets, meticulously chosen top-tier furniture, and delicate decor that spoke volumes about your adult style. However, with the arrival of children, this carefully curated adult domain naturally, and often rapidly, transforms into a dynamic family hub. Suddenly, toys become integral floor coverings, television channels like CBeebies dictate viewing schedules, and your once-immaculate furniture bravely endures the occasional bumps, the indelible marks, and the inevitable spills that come with energetic family life.
At Fresh Design Blog, we wholeheartedly understand that real family homes seldom mirror the flawless, showroom-esque aesthetics so frequently idealized on platforms like Pinterest. Yet, the beautiful reality of having children doesn’t necessitate a complete surrender of personal style. With a thoughtful approach and minor adjustments to your interior design philosophy, you can seamlessly blend practicality with elegance. By wisely selecting appropriate designs, colours, and robust fabrics for your furniture and decor, it is entirely possible to cultivate a stunning living room – one that not only looks fantastic but also effortlessly serves the diverse needs and dynamic routines of every family member, from the youngest to the oldest.
It was with this philosophy in mind that we eagerly accepted an invitation from Dfs to embark on an exciting sofa styling project. Our immediate focus gravitated towards the concept of a family living room transformation, specifically for a household with three wonderfully lively boys. Their existing sofa, a long-standing fixture in their home, had undoubtedly served its purpose well over the years, bearing witness to countless family moments. However, time had taken its toll; it now appeared undeniably tired, visibly worn out, saggy in places, and was unequivocally nearing the end of its useful life. The opportunity for a refresh was not just desired, but truly essential.

As the image vividly illustrates, this cherished but fatigued piece of furniture presented the absolute perfect candidate for a dramatic and much-needed sofa refresh, paving the way for a more functional and stylish future for the family’s central gathering space.
Introducing the DFS Arden Sofa: A Foundation for Family Style

For this pivotal family living room makeover, the sofa we ultimately selected and styled was the Arden three-seater from DFS. This particular model immediately stood out due to its inherently contemporary design, offering an ideal solution for injecting a fresh, modern aesthetic into the family’s room. Its thoughtful design incorporates subtle yet impactful details, such as the elegantly contrasting buttons on the upholstery, which elevate its appearance beyond that of a plain, standard sofa. These refined touches, coupled with its distinctive wooden feet, contribute significantly to its unique character and sophisticated charm.
The presence of visible sofa feet marked a notable departure from the family’s previous sofa, which sat low to the ground without any discernible feet. This design choice brings several compelling advantages to a busy family living room. Firstly, it offers practical potential for additional storage space underneath the sofa – an invaluable asset for discreetly tucking away toys, books, or games in stylish storage boxes, helping to maintain a clutter-free environment. Secondly, and equally important from a design perspective, elevated furniture with visible feet helps to “open up” the room, creating an illusion of greater space and airiness. We carefully opted for light wood feet to harmonise seamlessly with the family’s existing furniture, ensuring a cohesive and integrated look, although a darker wood option is also readily available for different aesthetic preferences.
The Arden sofa boasts versatility, being available in a selection of six distinct colour combinations. For the specific demands of a high-traffic family living room, the charcoal combination emerged as the perfect choice. This features a deep, dark charcoal fabric expertly paired with lighter charcoal button details. Beyond its stylish appeal, the charcoal grey hue is remarkably on-trend and currently enjoys widespread popularity in interior design. Crucially, its inherent dark tone makes it an incredibly practical colour for a family environment, adept at camouflaging minor spills and everyday wear, ensuring the sofa retains its elegant appearance for longer.
Thoughtful Sofa Styling: Blending Modern Trends with Family Functionality
When it came to the actual styling, our overarching objective was clear: to infuse the living room with a contemporary and stylish feel, cultivating a more ‘adult-like’ ambience, while simultaneously ensuring every element was supremely practical and adaptable to the dynamic needs of three young children. We were also keen to artfully incorporate several prevailing interior design trends. This included a strategic colour palette of sophisticated grey, crisp black, and clean white, chosen to create a pleasing contrast with the room’s existing warm red curtains and carpet. Furthermore, we integrated modern metallic finishes, specifically the inviting warmth of copper, to add an extra layer of contemporary elegance.
The Arden sofa, by default, arrived without additional scatter cushions. Recognising their importance in adding comfort and visual appeal, we sought out complementary options. We discovered a fantastic colour match within the George range, adding two generously sized cord charcoal cushions, each costing a modest £7. These not only enhanced the sofa’s comfort but also introduced a subtle textural contrast. Nearly all the other carefully chosen accessories used in our styling came from TK Maxx – a true treasure trove for anyone seeking affordable yet incredibly stylish home decor pieces that truly make a difference.

Look 1: The Everyday Family Haven – Style Meets Resilience
Here’s the first meticulously curated look we brought to life, designed for optimal everyday family living:

Every inviting sofa setup benefits from a well-chosen throw. We selected a light grey, sumptuously cosy throw (£12.99), perfect for children to snuggle under during movie nights or quiet reading sessions, while also offering an extra layer of protection for the sofa fabric. To introduce visual interest and a touch of Nordic charm, a delightful tree-design cushion (£12.99) was added, providing a gentle contrast to the plain charcoal cushions and injecting a subtle hint of Scandi style. To cleverly break up the expanse of the existing red carpet and delineate the sofa area, we introduced a gorgeous black and white geometric rug (£24.99). Its bold pattern and monochrome palette not only modernized the space but also fit perfectly in front of the sofa, grounding the entire arrangement.
The charming little white and light wood stool was an exceptional find from TK Maxx, initially reduced to £10 and then further discounted to £7.70 due to some minor marks on its surface. However, a little elbow grease and a thorough scrub revealed a piece that looked remarkably new. This versatile stool serves as an ideal spot for a drink, a book, or even impromptu extra seating. We then layered in some warm copper accents to align with current metallic trends. This included a striking copper wall clock (£10), a practical lidded copper pot (£4.99) – perfect for small essentials – and a small, easy-to-maintain succulent plant nestled in a matching copper pot (£2), bringing a touch of greenery without high maintenance. To help organise the usual stack of magazines, a sleek white wire basket (£14 from Sainsbury’s) was incorporated, offering both functionality and minimalist design. The elegant black and white star-design candle, placed on the stool, added a lovely touch of subtle fragrance to the room, even when unlit (£6.99). Though not prominently visible in this particular image, we also discovered a fun, modern horse design ornament in a pristine white finish (£12.99), adding a playful yet sophisticated element. The classic dog lamp positioned to the side of the sofa was an existing piece belonging to the family, seamlessly integrated into the new scheme.
Look 2: The Hygge Haven – An Evening Transformation for Adults
For our second styling approach, we introduced a few more pristine white accessories, aiming to transform the sofa zone into a truly cosy and serene space, perfect for adults to relax and unwind in during the quieter evening hours. This particular ‘look’ is perhaps best suited for evenings, as the delicate white elements might not be quite as practical during the bustling daytime when young children are around, potentially bringing sticky fingers or muddy hands.

At the heart of this ‘hygge’ inspired look is a supremely soft white throw (£16.99), designed to provide unparalleled comfort and warmth – an excellent way to effortlessly inject that cherished feeling of ‘hygge’ (a Danish concept of cosiness and contentment) into your living room. Complementing this, we added a snugly white faux fur cushion, offering luxurious texture and softness, alongside a small, subtly sparkly silvery-grey cushion to introduce a touch of understated glamour. In this look, the elegant horse ornament becomes a more central and visible feature, adding character and visual appeal to the transformed space.

We were genuinely delighted with the final aesthetic and functionality of the styled living room, and more importantly, the family in question expressed their absolute thrill with both their beautiful new DFS Arden sofa and the overall modernized feel of their living space. The Arden sofa itself is not only a lovely contemporary design but also exceptionally comfortable to sit on, providing a perfect spot for family gatherings and individual relaxation. Furthermore, the chosen charcoal fabric appears to be remarkably hard-wearing, instilling confidence that it will withstand the rigours of family life for many years to come.
It is truly astounding how profoundly a single new piece of furniture, particularly a central item like a sofa, can transform the entire look and feel of a room. With a little creative flair and invaluable help from retailers like TK Maxx and George, we were able to accessorise and style the DFS Arden sofa into two distinct and appealing looks, all for an impressive total spend of under £120. This project serves as a powerful testament to how far a modest budget can stretch when you approach shopping with wisdom and a keen eye for value and style.
